Bangkok hits you like a wall of heat, noise, and the best food you've ever smelled. It's overwhelming, chaotic, and absolutely addictive. Most backpackers start here, and for good reason — it's cheap, it's wild, and it sets the tone for everything that comes after.
Khao San Road is the backpacker epicenter but it's loud. For a better sleep, try the streets just off it or head to the Silom/Sathorn area for a more local vibe.
Street food in Bangkok is legendary. Forget restaurants — the best meals are on plastic stools at the side of the road. Budget about 40-80 baht ($1-2) per meal.
Bangkok has more temples than you can count, but don't sleep on the markets and river life. The city is massive — pick a few highlights and wander.
